Atkinson Grimshaw, John

British
1836-1893

General Information

John Atkinson Grimshaw was a Leeds painter of landscapes, town views and

dockyards, especially at sunset or by moonlight. Born the son of an ex-policeman,

Grimshaw first began painting while working as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway. He encountered bitter opposition from his parents, but after his marriage in 1858 to Theodosia Hobbarde, a cousin of T.S. Cooper, he was able to devote

himself to painting. By 1870, he was successful enough to rent Knostrop Old Hall, a 17th century mansion near Temple Newsam, which features in many of his pictures. Later in the 70s, he built a house near Scarborough, and in the 80s

rented a studio in Chelsea. Grimshaw painted mostly for private patrons, and exhibited only 5 works at the Royal Academy between 1874 and 1886, and one at the Grosvenor Gallery. The towns and docks that he painted most frequently were

Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds,Scarborough, Whitby and London. Grimshaw's style and

subject matter changed little during his career; he strove constantly to perfect his own very individual vision. He was interested in photography, and sometimes used a camera obscura to project outlines on to canvas, enabling him to repeat compositions several times. He also mixed sand and other ingredients with his paint to get the effects he wanted. Although he established no school, Grimshaw's pictures were forged and imitated in his lifetime, notably by Wilfred Jenkins and H. Meegan. Although his moonlit town views are his most popular works, he also painted landscapes, portraits, interiors, fairy pictures and neo-classical subjects.

During his early period he signed "J.A. Grimshaw" but c.1867 dropped the John, and signed himself Atkinson Grimshaw. He usually signed his pictures on the front and the reverse, inscribed with the title. Two of his sons, Arthur and Louis, were also painters.

I spent many happy years in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. I would like to have them valued but we are not able to find prints online of Lamplit bridge. Can anyone advise?

I saw a beautiful painting in an hotel recently which I think was a Grimshaw but can\'t find anything about it on an internet search. It was a docks scene and the light from the street lamps cast a yellow glow over the wet road. A lady in a long dark dress was walking and their was also a horse and cart and on the left a warehouse on which was printed \"Burtons Boatyard\". I would be most grateful for any information anyone can give as I would love a print of this stunning picture. Thank you Maggie 2009 11 24

hello everyone i have just come to appreciate the art of john atkinson grimshaw, and must say i am hooked. i have an original watercolour by wilfred jenkins titled \"petergate york\". i have seen an oil painting by the same artist of exactly the same streetscape both in form and composition and hope to learn more about the connection between this watercolour and the oil painting and the relationship between jenkins and grimshaw. the watercolour is 27cm by 17cm, and depicts the beautifull oldworldly charm of york with several figures on the street and a wagon coming up the road with the lovely towers in the background. thank you matthew

Here's hoping to help a few of your readers. The 2 best online galleries of Grimshaw's art I've found are Illusions Gallery - http://www.illusionsgallery.com/Grimshaw.html - and at http://www.atkinsongrimshaw.co.uk/ A couple of your readers' queries describe works that that are to be found on these websites.

Maybe to help answer a few more queries, here's a quote from http://www.atkinsongrimshaw.co.uk/ "Grimshaw's pictures were forged and imitated in his lifetime, notably by Wilfred Jenkins and H. Meegan." Some of those fondly remembered Grimshaw's might be by Jenkins or Meegan. (Collectable in their own right?)

Congratulations on your mentioning Grimshaw's use of the early camera. I've been trying to track down information about this for a blog I'm writing - http://coxsoft.blogspot.com/ - and yours is the first website I've come across that mentions it.

Does anyone know where I can see the picture " A Mansion at Sunset" or where I might purchase the print of it.

M. R. Taylor - 2006-03-12

In around 1972/73 I saw a painting in the Richard Green gallery in London which I thought was stunning. I subsequently found out it was by John Atkinson Grimshaw and I think it was called 'Silvery Moonlight'. I have, unfortunately, never seen it in any gallery I have visited since or in any exhibition of his work nor in any art book I have scanned. It was of a dark, moonlit, run down rainy street and in the centre, driving away was, I think, a horse and cart. I would love to have just a print of this since the original at that time was in the region of £1,200-odd. If anyone knows of its existence I would love to hear from them.

I have two prints for sale 'Lamplit bridge' & 'Winter moonlight' both by J A Grimshaw. Any offers ?

I now live in Scarborough and the local paper carried a piece recently that Grimshaw's painting of Forge Valley had sold for £120,000. His house in Scarborough, Castle by the Sea is possibly for sale but I do not have details. If you search on eBay there are firms selling canvas prints of Grimshaw paintings for around £11. There is a large range including Scarborough Lighthouse, view from the Grand Hotel and Boar Lane and Park Row in Leeds.

Re; Original 'On the Thames', Barnes

My grandfather sold many original Grimshaw's when conducting an auction for a 'well-heeled' house sale in York back in 1978. 'On the Thames, Barnes' was one of the pictures under the hammer, selling for £4,800 back then. The original is still in private collection.

I came across a wonderful colour photograph of a JA Grimshaw painting: A Moonlit Lane. It depicts (an old) lady, seen from the rear, walking with the aid of a stick along a lane towards a large country house that is illuminated in the moonlight. She is wearing a head cover and shawl. It is an autumn/winter scene and the trees are leafless. The near full moon casts a marvellous glow on the countryside.

I have taken a digital scan and if anyone would like to see it, email me and I will send it to you.

It came up for auction at Sotheby’s in 1985 and the price guide was £4,000 - £6,000.

I found a print in a charity shop in Banbury, entitled: On the Thames, Barnes by John Atkinson Grimshaw. I was wondering if anyone knew where the original painting might be and if JAG painted any other scenes of Barnes (London SW13).

My Mother, Mrs Barbara Benn's family were all tenants at Knostrop Hall. Circa 1920 - 1940 ish. Her Father Herbet Benn used to take her there to see them. Does anyone have any info about the tenants at Knostrop. Her Uncle Ned was the gardner there.

Any info much appreciated.

My father, James P Battle owned a painting called "Boar Lane by Night" by Atkinson Grimshaw, but signed Wilfred Jenkins which was accepted for sale by Sothebys in June 1966 the sale being in October 1966. he received £20 less commission on 30th November 1966. I would dearly love to know what became of that picture as I remember it hanging over the fireplace in our house in Leeds when I was a child. It was of a night scene of trams in the rain on Boar Lane.

Julee Grimshaw,

I also have a painting by your grandfather Wilfred. Do you have an email so I can send you images? Jay18018@aol.com
Jason - 2005-02-21

I notice in the article about John Atkinson Grimshaw you mention two of his son's as artists. This information is in fact wrong. He had a third son who was also an artist. Wilfred Atkinson Grimshaw immigrated to Australia in the early 1900's. This man was my Grandfather. I have in my possessions three paintings by Wilfred Atkinson Grimshaw.

Julee Grimshaw - 2004-12-21

My link is really with Knostrop, whilst J.A.G. lived at Knostrop Old Hall my family lived at Knostrop New Hall. In 1960 two paintings hung in my Gt Granpa's house in Scarborough. One a handsome cab by moonlight, the other I cannot remember. Fifteen years later on marriage and moving to York I was given by the lady who inherited the above paintings (noone else wanted them in 1960) a moonscape of the Ouse at York. It is a rather primiive painting though alright in poor light! Not listed anywhere by anyone famous, is it!? Any paintings of the New Hall?plenty of the Old Hall of course.

I have tried many galleries, dealers etc. but no-one seems to have heard of "Lamplit Bridge", even Leeds City Art Gallery.

Many years ago when I lived in Armley Leeds we had a painting in our loft of the Fox and Hounds Pub in Horsforth,it is a moonlight scene and shows two people a man and a woeman crossing the road. the pub was not too far away from Horsforth Station, it was signed A Grimshaw, my Grandfather who was a fairly good artist himself did a copy of the picture, it would be interesting to know if that picture is still in circulation.....(I'm not sure what happend to it as I got married and moved away from the family home) it was probably given away to someone.
