Riley, BridgetBritish1931 General Information English painter and designer, the leading British exponent of Op Art, whose interest in optical effects came in part from her study of Seurat's technique of pointillism. When Riley took up Op Art in the early 1960's she worked in black & white, turning to colour in 1966. Her work shows a complete mastery of the effects characteristic of Op art, particularly subtle variations in size, shape or placement of serialized units in an all-over pattern. Using groups of colours, she concentrates on forms which liberate fugitive colour with the minimum of distraction, e.g.stripes. It is often on a large scale and she frequently makes use of assistants for the actual execution. Although her paintings often create effects of vibration and dazzle, one of her 1980's works is a decorative scheme for the interior of the Royal Hospital, Liverpool, which uses soothing bands of blue, yellow, pink and white, and which is reported to have caused a drop in vandalism. She has travelled extensively, and a visit to Egypt in 1981 was particularly influential on her work, as she was inspired by the colours of ancient Egyptian art. Her later work is warmer, the formal elements more variable and the control of fugitive colour more apparent. Born in London in 1931, Riley studied at Goldsmith's College of Art under Sam Rabin, 1949-52 and at the RCA 1952-55 where her contemporaries included Dick Smith, Peter Blake, Joe Tilson and John Bratby. She taught at Loughborough College of Art(1959-61), Hornsey College of Art( 1960) and Croydon College of Art (1962-64). For a time she was adviser to J Walter Thompson advertising agency. She had her first solo show in 1962 at Gallery One, was a prize-winner at John Moores Liverpool Exhibition in 1963, then took part in a series of overseas shows in 1964 which consolidated her growing international reputation. There were Arts Council touring shows in 1973 and 1984, the year after she designed sets and costumes for Ballet Rambert's "Colour Moves".Her many awards include the Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale in 1968 and a CBE in 1972. She has studios in London, Cornwall and Provence. The British Council and the Tate Gallery hold her work. I've just started doing A-level Art and we are looking at land forms or man made objects. When looking at lines I looked at Bridget Riley's work and encorporated some of it into my own work. It made my work look really impressive using some of the techniques she uses in her work to show lines!!

Bridget Riley's art has the effect that great pop records can have.Instant,yet strangely haunting.You can't really dissect the things you love without losing the true taste.

I´m a musician and I find Rileys work connect deepely with music. Not only with the modernist (Schoenberg, Webern, Cage, Reich, Glass etc...) but also with Bach and Mozart and the classical composers and with jazz. When I , much by incident, bought a book by de Sausmarez on Reiley I thought "So this is what music looks like". Rileys work has groove!
I wonder if the turner prize nominee Jim Lambie was in any way inspired by Riley in the creation of his mesmerising floor displays !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love BRIDGET RILEY'S work and i'm doing a project on her at school for art. The best bit i like of her drawing is that she just uses lines but in a differnt way e.g wavy lines and that means she's got a big imagination. I love art and i wish one day i can become a painter or someone who just likes drawing.

It’s a database site with thousands of artists on file, not just Riley! All the "Hi bridit, yo watsup" stuff is as pointless as it is painfull. Im sorry for being a moaning grump. At least they're all enthusiastic about it, thats got to be a good thing.

Hi, I just landed on this site whilst doing a little research on art forums for a current project. While I welcome the unbridled enthusiasm of these students I do feel that they perhaps need to work a little harder on their language skills! Maybe I'm getting a bit long in the tooth but I get a sense that Art teachers are not discussing historical contexts as fully as they might. It's great that the language used perhaps challenges an academic approach which could be considered fusty, oblique and somewhat elitist and I would be fascinated to hear what Ms Riley (as an artist whos place in the panoply of art history is assured) thinks about the approaches of these young people. i find Bridget Riley's work amazing. it has so many aesthetic qualities that keep the viewer viewing. i do studio arts-glass and i'm doing a major essay on Riley even though shes not a glass artist. ilove her use of line. absoloutly briliant.

I really enjoyed your op art, Ms. Riley. It was something totally different and I like different things. When I stare at the picture, first I get really dizzy then I think I'm in the picture with all the lines and shapes, its really fun! I started my own op art also, since I take an art class at my school that is one of the projects we're working on. Plus I have a research project to do about you and I was really happy to do it. I hope you continue with your op art, it's very neat and somewhat chaotic.

I love the way her pictures give you feeling of infinity. The images make me think of a world which is infinite and that she is only showing us a very small part of that world in her pictures. When I've looked hard at her pictures in galleries I sometimes find that I see colours that aren't actually there but your brain seem's to see them and also I sometimes see the stripes or waves start to move after looking at her pictures for five or ten minutes

Bridget Riley, you have greatly inspired me this year. I am currently studying art at degree level and due to varoius unforseen occurunces this year i have been greatly depressed and felt that i could no longer carry on my studies. However after visiting you exhibition at the Tate 2003 i felt refreshed and that i could carry on with my life again. Just by looking you have really opened my eyes and lifted my spirits. Wow, I really love all the Op art and Pop art work. I'm basing my final GCSE project on it and Bridget Riley is a big inspiration. I don't know how she came up with the ideas but there brilliant.
Dear Ms. Riley: You rock. I teach Art to 10 to 12 year olds, and I'm planning a lesson based on Op Art, featuring your work. Not only will it grab the kids attention, but I like to be sure and give gurl artists equal time.

I'm in my 2nd year of A levels in Art, Ceramics, and Fashion and find it annoying that I'm not allowed to relate all of my own works to Bridget's! I have to do a "personal study" in each of my courses which is a 3rd of my final grade. So thanks for helping me achieve my A levels Bridget!!

I like Bridget Riley's work alot. I mostly like the illusions that the pictures show. I also like the patterns of alternating colour. I think Bridget Riley is a GREAT artist.

i personally think that the work of bridget riley is an abstract view on what she percieves as nature.I have been studying her work at school and i think her pictures are very strange but are quite good.

March.2001. Bridget Riley is a part-time tutor with De Montfort University, Leicester and has a studio in London. The last I heard was she is well, still with De Montfort Uni. and stil;l producing the most amazing colour work that is liable to affect the 21st century. By a De Montfort Uni. student.
