Introduction | Museums Guide | Artists on View | What's On | Maps | Visitors Forum

Welcome to Art Guide, the comprehensive Internet guide to the art collections of Great Britain and Ireland.

There are hundreds of magnificent public art collections in Great Britain and Ireland and each year they are enjoyed by millions of visitors from all over the world. Art Guide is for anyone who has ever enjoyed a trip to one of these collections. We hope that it will lead to many more pleasures of the same kind.

Contents
Art Guide is organised by artist, by museum, and geographically. The database currently contains:

  • more than 1,900 named artists
  • more than 650 museums
  • more than 4,500 individual listings
  • comprehensive exhibitions listings
For each artist there is a list of their works and where they can be found; for each museum a list of outstanding works in the collection, an address, telephone number and links to other museums in the same region.

How to Use Art Guide
We have divided Art Guide into sections. If you are looking for places to visit use the museum guide. If you want to browse geographically use the maps. If you are looking for works by a particular artist try the artists on view section. For exhibitions see what's on. To see what other people are excited about go to the visitors' forum.

First Release and Your Feedback
As of November 1997 we are releasing Art Guide to the public. At this time it is based on our own research, existing published sources and an extensive survey. From questionnaires sent out earlier this year to more than 500 hundred collections we have had roughly 250 replies. We have entered data for every reply we have received to date but please bear with us, and the organisations we are working with, while the survey is completed.

If you find errors or omissions please use the comments facility provided on every page to let us know about them so we can respond and improve the database. Please also let us know what you think about the publication in general.

The Producers and Sponsors
Art Guide is currently produced by Cognitive Applications Limited. It is our commemoration of Britain and Ireland's great heritage of art collecting and art collections. We hope that Art Guide will encourage more people to visit and enjoy it. Long may these institutions flourish for us all to enjoy.

If you would like to help us support Art Guide either personally or by commercial sponsorship please let us know.

Disclaimer
We are aware that the present publication is incomplete and despite our efforts will inevitably contain some inaccuracies. If visiting a museum to see a particular work of art we strongly suggest telephoning in advance to confirm that it will be on view when you get there.

The producers disclaim any and all liabilities for damages that may result from the use of Art Guide.
