Background information
Cardiff Castle is a Roman and Norman site. But its chief interest lies in the superb fantasy restoration made by the19th century Gothic revival architect William Burges for the third Marquess of Bute. The castle fabric itself is lavishly decorated with wall murals, and stone and wood sculpture, all designed by, or under the direction of, Burges. The castle collections include furniture by Burges, and the collection of architectural drawings is available to researchers by appointment. Access to the building is by guided tour throughout the year.
