Background information
The Fruitmarket Gallery has been operating as a visual arts space since 1974 when the market traders moved out of the city centre. It has gone from strength to strength with its programme of national and international exhibitions encompassing the leading figures in contemporary art. Showing six exhibitions each year, The Fruitmarket Gallery's mission is to "bring the work of leading artists worldwide to Scotland and to exhibit the work of Scottish artists in an international context, engaging with contemporary issues". Over the past five years the gallery has exhibited major international figures such as Bill Viola, James Turrell, Yoko Ono and Gerhard Richter, whilst also profiling the work of established and emerging Scottish artists.

In addition to its resident exhibition programme, The Fruitmarket Gallery also runs a highly successful touring exhibitions programme which over the past five years has toured the work of Scottish and international artists all over the world.
